What to do with your life after menopause?. Many of you have experienced motherhood, dealt with young rebels, empty nest syndrome, exasperating in-laws, juggled career and home with finesse and are on the threshold of a retirement. Relentlessly for almost four decades you coped with the monthly reminder of your womanhood. Now that your periods have vanished, you should be relieved, but you have more unpleasant things on your platter.
Ageing is all about maturing gracefully. You are wiser than a 30 something woman. Relax and bask in the warmth of a secure life. Occupying oneself constructively and enjoying life is the buzzword. Imagine-you aren’t answerable to a soul in the world!
There are women who have taken to side careers post-retirement, pursuing what they dreamt of, but could never bring to fruition earlier. Some women enter university portals and earn degrees at the age of 60! Keeping your gray cells in working order can be fun.
Some globe trot with spouses or friends, others participate in community welfare activities. I know of a couple which conducts marriage workshops, educating the youth of what it takes to live through commitments! This couple often has visitors; including adolescents hassled with puppy love, couples with mid-life crisis and single parents.
Some write books, others maintain a garden, conduct classes, sell baked cookies and even supervise day care centers. Apart from keeping themselves busy, they are also financially independent. Spending quality time with grandchildren can be fun too, taking the load off their children’s backs. However, if you feel that your freedom is curbed, decline politely. Explain your reasons and let your children know that you would always be there to look after grandchildren when your children need a holiday.
Resorting to complaining, keeping oneself unfit and nit-picking will only worsen your problems. There are drugs that help you cope with incontinence and other embarrassments. Sex is only in the mind! If you had begun well, you should be able to still enjoy beneath the sheets, now that everything is familiar territory! True love replaces heart-throbbing passion.
Cultivating friendships with same aged couples can be extremely beneficial when spouses die. Community get-togethers can also be fun when our vision and other senses fail us. Single women can also start dating men, now that men your age are matured and prefer companionship to an hourglass figure. Keeping in touch with old friends can be mutually beneficial, as your once busy friends have the time now. With busy children and busier husbands or long departed spouses, they may need you more now.
