There are several treatment options open for women going through the menopause phases. Some are effective and others not. Some have side effects and should be considered carefully others may have little or no side effects. Here are some common forms of treatment.
A treatment for menopause that has been used for some time is hormone replacement therapy or HRT. This is just replacing estrogen and progesterone hormones with small doses of estrogen or a combination of estrogen and progesterone. This treatment is used to relieve the symptoms of menopause especially hot flashes and vaginal dryness. There is some controversy about this treatment as it has been linked to breast cancer, stroke and heat attacks. Doctors are now using it in minimal doses and exercising caution. Estrogen can be given orally, vaginally or combined.
If you experience moderate to severe depressions in menopause it may be necessary for your doctor to prescribe antidepressant medicines. These also help with hot flashes. There are other prescription medicines used for relief of menopause symptoms. Unfortunately many of them can have side effects.
Because of these side effects you may want to look into alternative medicines. Soybeans, and soy products like soymilk and tofu can give you isoflavones. Chic peas and lentils can also supply this. It is not as potent as the actual estrogen but can certainly give you some relief. However there is still more research to be done as there is some controversy as to the pros and cons of this treatment.
Vitamin E is also used to help with mild symptoms of hot flashes. However larger doses of Vitamin E are suspected of being linked to heart disease. Black cohosh is also used for relief of hot flashes, these herbal medication are used in Europe and are catching on in the USA. It is recommended not to use longer than 6 months.
Natural diet is also a good thing in menopause and will not prevent symptoms but can give you relief. If you keep in good health you will feel better and be able to cope with the mental and physical trauma of menopause.
Further research is needed for alternative medical treatments. However as more is done we will see more choices available for treating the symptoms of menopause. This means that you will no longer have to dread this time of life, but be able to take it in your stride as a natural part of life.
