Menopause And Depression: Dealing with depression caused by menopause

Women worldwide dread the onset of menopause, as much as they resent the monthly periods! This dual attitude has put many men in a quandary too. “Women just need a reason to cry”, it’s said. When young women turn hysterical, the reason is attributed to PMS or Premenstrual syndrome. When new mothers experience mood swings, the reason obviously is fatigue. And when a middle age woman loses her cool, it’s most definitely due to Menopause! Whatever be the reason, we certainly must thank nature for giving us umpteen reasons to attribute our mood swings to! Blame it all on your hormones.

The word ‘menopause’ does ring an alarm in most women’s psyche. The full-stop of periods not only brings its own aches and pains, but makes a woman perceive herself as ‘done with’! She cannot ovulate anymore which means a full-stop to pregnancy. Womanhood all over the world is associated with pregnancy, motherhood and of course menstruation. It is a known fact that a woman has a healthy craving for sex during the first fortnight after her period. The cessation of ovulation signifies a lull in a woman’s sex life, added to it, the lack of lubrication. Moreover, women appear physically less attractive with paunches, sagging facial skin, fat deposits in arms and buttocks, receding and graying hairline, shrinking of collagen in the neck, etc.

The fact that her function and duty of a woman is over, can make a woman feel worthless. Menopause also signals the arrival of old age! Thus women who still have much to accomplish and whose dreams are still unfulfilled, can turn bitter. Some complex women even start comparing themselves with younger women. What is the solution? While medicines can mitigate physical difficulties, psychological pain and a sense of emptiness can be more challenging.

The solution is to age gracefully by cultivating same sex and age friends. When a ‘coffee table’ discussion is all about menopause, sex after menopause and handling the blues, by women who share the same dilemma, life can be fun again! Of course husband’s support also goes a long way in helping women cope. But its female bonding that actually alleviates depression! Spinsters can join a club and mingle with others or share their experiences with single mothers or other spinsters.

The way you shared the pains of your first few periods and shared insights into your love lives in teenage, you can share insights into ageing gracefully! And none other than other women who’re experiencing what you are can create a balance in your life right now.
