Most of us have heard about menopausal hot flushes and how women experience these. Itβs supposed to be quite a bad situation and women would do anything not to undergo this experience. A hot flush is just a heat wave sweeping through your entire body, when your face turns red and sweaty. Perspiration lasts from 15 minutes to an hour in some rare cases. The face may turn blotchy too. Some women experience hot flushes at night.
Although the main reason for menopausal hot flushes is the decline in estrogen level, there are other factors too that contribute to this phenomenon. Women who consume an excess of caffeine and spicy food are more prone to hot flushes. Thus, it is wise to curb spicy food like ginger and pepper, although ginger does boost libido during menopause. Foods high in acidic content like pickles and tomatoes should be avoided. Curb the consumption of coffee, tea, aerated drinks and chocolates too. Moderate your consumption of alcohol and switch over to yogurt and fresh water. The same goes for smokers. Smoking is also another culprit that increases menopausal hot flushes.
Although many women would love to be pampered in saunas and Jacuzzis, the heat generated by hot tubs in saunas can compound the problem. Stress, anxiety, depression and repressed anger can also act as catalysts to hot flushes.
There are however, many remedies to choose from, although according to Dr. Susan Lark, there is no absolute cure for hot flushes, although the phenomenon can be minimized. Estrogen replacement therapy is the answer to this problem, although it is only known to mitigate effects of hot flushes and not completely obliterate the feeling.
Herbal remedies are also quite effective. Sipping water at night when night flushes appear will minimize the problem. Diet that is rich in Vitamin B and C, calcium, potassium and magnesium and fiber rich diet such as oats etc can also alleviate hot flushes. Homeopathy is another alternative that can certainly reduce this phenomenon. Aromatherapy too is in vogue these days. Essential oils can uplift your mood and make you feel fresh if not curb hot flushes totally.
Mudra therapy, where you hold your fingers in certain symbol like gestures and yoga have their benefits too. Apart from cheap and effective, yoga and mudra therapy can cure a host of other problems as well. A competent yoga instructor will tell you what will work for you, after examining your history.
