Medical science is an imperfect science. It doesn’t have a cure for many of the natural aging processes. Menopause is one of them. Though medicines are no remedy for menopause it reduces the stress that is created by it. Herbal and natural plant remedies are yet to be proved. There are some home remedies for menopause which can help in reducing the pain and water retention and osteoporosis. Ethnic difference plays a major role in menopause. Caucasian women get hot flushes where as Asian women don’t. The family system is healthy in the east and so whatever problem one undergoes there are relatives and friends to help. Talking to seniors in the family who have undergone the same pain a couple of years ago or a decade ago helps relieving the stress and assures you that this is a normal occurrence and there is no cause to panic.
Western women in comparison to Asians eat less soy and other phytoestrogen foods. Where as Japanese women, who have a higher intake of soy protein, do not get the symptoms like hot flushes.
Another menopause problem is fluid retention. This makes a woman urinate often and swelling in the feet and hands is common sight. Weight gain is partially due to water retention during menopause. Barley is a food grain that is good for water retention. Boil barley in water and leave it to cool. Drinking barley water daily can reduce the swelling. Cucumber, melons and grapes should help flush out excess water naturally. Salt intake should be to the minimum. Avoid spicy and starchy food during menopause. Fresh fruits, vegetables, soy and low fat milk and milk products should supplement the necessary nutrients required at this time.
Coconut water and date palms are good resources of potassium. They help in reducing neurological problems. Depression is another major problem that occurs during menopause. A woman feels like crying for no reason at all and is always sad and unhappy. A good massage with aroma oils at a spa can help in lifting her spirits. Physical exercise can also help weight reduction and mood swings. Walking and climbing stair case instead of taking an elevator can help in maintaining your body. A healthy mind has a healthy body. So keep yourself motivated to feel happy and menopause is after all a passing phase which happens to each and every woman born on this earth. So you are not alone in this. Join a laughter club or a ladies club where there are like minded people and enjoy exchanging notes about yourself with them, like you did as a teenager. After all somebody once said that old age is second childhood, isn’t it?
