Can phytoestrogen supplements reduce menopausal symptoms?

The workshop on ‘menopause and life beyond it’ was conducted at the community health center. Kelly attended it with her neighbors Sophia and Janet. They thought they’ll sit for a couple of minutes and then move away. But the talk was so interesting that they got engrossed and forgot the time. The three friends who went into the center with trepidation came out gleefully having enjoyed the talk and learning a lot about the blues of menopause.

Aching joints, sagging skin, mood swings and sleepless nights will not be that bad anymore as the three women felt they are not alone in this. Most of the women all over the world go through this at a certain age. The middle of your hourglass figure starts bulging. Your skin has started losing its elasticity. Fine lines and wrinkles are guests no more. Graying and thinning of hair is another menace. Some of you may be married to an amorous husband who is still able to perform, but you find it difficult to reciprocate his overtures. Your heart is still young, but your body is not in sync! Welcome to the world of menopause.

The play of hormones during the age of 45 and above is due to stopping of menstruation in women. It’s a relief from monthly periods and stomach cramps. What is a phytoestrogen? This is a chemical found in plants that acts like the estrogen produced naturally in the body. This plant estrogen circulates in the blood at levels thousands of times higher than natural estrogen. This helps in balancing the estrogen levels in the body. Essential oils like lavender, juniper and rosemary are known to relieve water retention and also alleviate depression.

The role of soy protein, a source of phytoestrogen in controlling menopausal symptoms and helping to protect against heart disease, osteoporosis and some cancers is currently under scrutiny. It is yet not clear if phytoestrogens in food or dietary supplements can reduce menopausal symptoms because the current scientific evidence is conflicting.

There is a theory that phytoestrogens cause infertility in men. Men who eat phytoestrogen develop breasts like women though not that big. There isn’t much evidence that menopausal shakes, powders, or pills work. It is also known that a man looses his libido with the intake of phytoestrogen. Generally Asian women have less menopausal problems than western women. This is probably because Asians take soy and other edible phytoestrogens in their diet. So, take soy and you will have nothing to grieve about.
