Menopause and soy – The benefits of soybeans and diet in menopause

Some of the symptoms of menopause like hot flashes and consuming more soy in your diet can alleviate night sweats. Women in Japan and the Orient have proved this, where they eat a significant amount of soy products, including their famous Tofu. The Japanese women do not experience hot flashes or night sweats in menopause, as much as those in the West.

How does soy help with hot flashes and night sweats? Soy has genistein and daidzein, which act like estrogen, and relives the symptoms of hot flashes. Phytoestrogens also play a part in relieving symptoms, as they will also have an effect like estrogen.

Soy products can come in several forms. However the most common ones are; soy milk, soy beans, and of course Tofu. They are all readily available in the grocery store, usually in the organic, or health food section.

Another thing to take into consideration is the fact that the oriental peoples have more vegetable and less animal protein, in their diet. Added to this is the fact that their diet is also low in fat. Extra calcium is also recommended to alleviate, problems caused by menopause. Whole grain foods, which provide extra fiber foods with magnesium and those with vitamin E, and foods with minerals, like sea vegetables Water is important in any diet but more so with menopause, as it will replenish fluids lost when you have hot flashes and can even make the symptoms less.

There are some foods that are thought to aggravate hot flashes and night sweats. They are caffeine, dairy and meat products, spicy foods, and alcohol. Vegetable juices can have a calming effect on hot flashes, as they alkalize your system. Of course exercise will always be beneficial and can help relieve symptoms. It is good to stop smoking as this can aggravate hot flash symptoms.

By just changing your diet and lifestyle you can get relief from some symptoms of menopause. When you take care of your diet you will be healthier and feel better automatically. When you combine good eating with the addition of soy in your diet you will be more in control of your menopause symptoms and be able to cope better.
